Dark Circus (for Orchestra)
This piece is inspired by the playful chromaticism of circus music, as well as the storytelling nature of Shostakovich's Op. 8 and Op. 67 piano trios.

Lang Lang's expressions are a real turn-off for viewers. His moving head looks like one of those car dashboard dolls. It's almost impossible not to be distracted by the way he expresses himself. It's bizarre. The guy thinks he's on a circus stage, not playing the piano.

On one side, we have an excellent pianist, a musical savant, loved by many and admired for his good performance and his talent in performing difficult compositions. On the other side, we have Lang Lang.

Impressive, yes...... but it was never intended to be played like this. There are things to be said for traditionalism.

It's really out of this world! I seem to hear this piece for the first time, as it sounds really different, wth a different vibration and personality. Indeed it's from the unique lang Lang!

Hamelin is a giant at the piano. I've played Ondine before, and this particular passage is what I call 'the bar of death'. Loads of cross rhythms and playing it is certainly no easy feat. It's a very human moment.

Music is sound. Mimic is mimic. They don't mix well. When I was a child, 65 years ago, I played piano recitals. My dad told me not to emote. I didn't understand why not. Lang Lang is why not. His antics simply distract from the wonderful music which he does do well. My advice to his audience: close your eyes and enjoy the music.

The same thing happened to me the first time I played this piece. That is usually one of the most difficult passages in all of classical music. Then, watch him play Scarbo, he does it superbly, and that piece is 1000 times more difficult than Ondine. After all, Gaspard de la Nuit is one of the most technically complex works in the entire piano repertoire.

Lang tries to entertain people through his facial expressions, but he already has the technique to inspire the audience. Unnecessarily people pay attention on his face than music often.

You got your Tim Duncans, quiet but 5 rings. You got your Lang Langs you know every hair and skin cell is feeling it. It takes all the colours but the masterpiece is still beautiful.
